Now heres a mans gun.

The Ruger Alaskan chambered in a .454 Casull with a 2.5 in barrel.

Judging by the pictures the recoil is stiff on this one.

Bears beware!!! :tongue_ma:

Otherwise known as 'How to spend $30 of ammo in 60 seconds and not hit squat'. I'll stick to 9x19 and hit what I point at.

LOL! If it were simply a .44 mag in a 2.5 inch barrel it would be an awesome little car gun.

Tried to upload a picture of the S&W Model 500, .50 cal. magnum. I bought the one with the 10.5" barrel. It was a total impulse buy. When Arnold outlawed the .50 BMG rifle in California, I got pissed and bought the .50 handgun, figuring they would ban that as well. You ain't shittin' about the price of ammo. Right about two bucks a round! I'm gonna use it to wear as a flashy showpiece, when people need to be reminded they are on private property. It makes a .44 magnum look like a .38. If you want to hunt Moose or Buffalo, it's a one shot, drop them in their tracks gun.

If I were going to get this gun for bear defense in Alaska, I would prolly go with the .480 Ruger chambering.

Comparing the .454 Casull to the .480 Ruger and judging by the pressures, It seems like the .480 would be easier to control. I would think if a grizzly bear is charging you, you would want something that offers somewhat of quick recoil recovery.

Personally, against a bear, I'd rather have something to the order of a flaregun. Bears are fast. Far faster than most folk will ever credit. Drawing and getting off a killing shot against a fast moving bear happens in the movies, not in real life. You're more likely to survive by scaring off the bear than trying to kill it. Flash, noise and burning are all things that a bear will turn from. Pain isn't.

I've fired the Ruger .480.... Theres few other things that make you feel like a man:D:tongue_ma:

jk ladies....

That thing has recoil like a charging rhino. It is manageable with the correct grip. I didn't have the balls to shoot it one handed though. Im not heavy framed at all.

I agree. As much as I like the large cal. handguns (Super Redhawk in .44 cal. is sweet), its best to avoid a confrontation with an animal this powerful. They will F you up. Moose can be mean too. If you're fishing or hiking in bear country, pay attention and make some noise as you move. This can be difficult fishing in heavy brush. Wading around a bend, and suddenly HELLO! - moose standing there ready to stomp your head.

I've had mountain goats try to push me off the trail in Glacier National Park. Not life threatening, but kind of ornery they were.

I don't know about that, there has been many cases where noise wasn't enough to scare a bear away.

I just watched a whole program on National Geographic about killer polar bears. That and the movie Grizzly Man was evidence to me that a good big bore hand gun (.44 mag and up) is a necessity when out in any area where there might be big bears.

Puzzy Gun ! You want real he-man kick, try Gary Reeder's "BMF" 500 Maximum conversion. Even puts the S&W 500 mag to shame........
